Children's unit outpatient case files, 1953-1971.

Under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential and outpatient care and treatment for mentally ill persons--prior to 1967 specializing in acute psychotic disorders and since then serving more generally the Boston metropolitan area. The outpatient department, known as the Southard Clinic since the mid-1940s, operates a unit to treat children with behavioral problems. Children's unit outpatient case files are created to provide a record of the diagnosis and treatment of children brought by parents or referred by courts.
